A Century of Dreams and Five Generations of ZHIFU

In 1871, the exceptionally talented master of gold and silver craftsmanship, Shen Xuanxiang, gained fame among the overseas Chinese business elite in Gulangyu Island, Xiamen, for his exquisite craftsmanship and intricate jewelry designs. For over 150 years, ZHIFU has passed down and innovated traditional intangible cultural heritage (ICH) techniques, paying tribute to both traditional Chinese culture and the unique culture of Southern Fujian. ZHIFU not only emphasizes cultural continuity and heritage but also leverages innovation as a key driving force for the brand’s evolution, standing out as a leader in jewelry design during the rise of Chinese national brands. Through this innovative spirit, ZHIFU reinterprets the charm of jewelry, setting a benchmark for the modern expression of Chinese culture.

International Jeweler Sought After by Gulangyu's Wealthy Business Community

In the early 20th century, Gulangyu Island was a convergence point for Eastern and Western cultures, attracting affluent elites from East Asia and around the world. Shen Xuanxiang’s superb craftsmanship and elegant Eastern aesthetic won the admiration of the wealthy, and his business flourished. He opened the first ZHIFU Gold Shop on the bustling Zhenbang Road, marking the beginning of ZHIFU’s century-long journey. Shen’s eldest son, Shen Shengshu, later took over the family business, expanding its range to include jade, diamonds, and colored gemstones, blending exquisite metalwork with contemporary design trends.

In the 1920s, under the talented third-generation heir Shen Quanmo, ZHIFU’s fine jewelry began to merge the rich culture of Southern Fujian with influences from Southeast Asia and Western fashion. By the 1930s, the unique ZHIFU style emerged, combining traditional fine metal techniques with the elegant dynamism of modern jewelry. Incorporating vibrant natural gemstones, ZHIFU’s designs reflected a blend of grandeur and the timeless elegance of Chinese aesthetics.

Fusion of East and West, Ancient and Modern

In the 1980s, ZHIFU introduced elements of Eastern jade and jadeite, along with the five-element color schemes from the Chinese imperial tradition, into jewelry design. Drawing inspiration from traditional Chinese culture, these innovative jade designs became a signature element of the brand, showcasing the harmonious pairing of jade with bright, colorful gemstones.

Entering the prosperous 21st century, ZHIFU’s Jewelry Aesthetics Art Museum, located in the beautiful coastal city of Xiamen, became a favorite gathering place for social elites. Known for its craftsmanship and Oriental aesthetics, ZHIFU earned renown both domestically and internationally. Jewelry aesthetics expert and ZHIFU heir Shen Lida injected new innovative elements into the brand, drawing inspiration from Eastern classicism to Western Art Deco, catering to the vibrant tastes of modern women. ZHIFU’s iconic tiara, with its fusion of East and West, ancient and modern, became an innovative masterpiece upon its debut.

Innovative National Trend with Diverse Styles

As Chinese national brands and cultural confidence rise, ZHIFU continuously innovates, launching new jewelry collections designed for Eastern women. With strong design elements rooted in Chinese cultural totems such as butterflies, gourds, swallows, and the five elements, ZHIFU empowers modern, outstanding women with these symbols of wisdom. Its distinctive designs reflect unique individuality and elegance.

Combining traditional elements with modern aesthetics, ZHIFU challenges the pinnacle of intricate craftsmanship: engraving, gold inlay, filigree, invisible setting, floating setting, prong setting, stone-on-stone setting, faceted pearls, titanium, enamel, and more. These techniques push the boundaries of luxury, not only enhancing the visual and tactile appeal of each piece but also establishing ZHIFU’s distinctive world-class aesthetic and Oriental charm.

What truly sets ZHIFU apart is its relentless pursuit of excellence, perfectly blending traditional ICH techniques with modern technology. ZHIFU has pioneered innovative techniques such as the vibrant “mirror-like surface” and “prismatic brilliance” settings, achieving a level of precision comparable to international luxury brands. With timeless gold and gemstones as the medium, and Chinese cultural essence as the inspiration, ZHIFU presents the graceful charm and elegance of contemporary Eastern women.
